Does an Air Purifier Help With Eczema?
According to official stats from the EPA, an air purifier with a HEPA filter can effectively remove 99.97% of skin and respiratory irritants, helping control allergy flare-ups and improving indoor air quality simultaneously.
Dust, mites, pollens, and dander all contribute to eczema in one way or another. While researchers are divided as to what can cause the flare-ups, removing these and other pollutants from the air has shown promising results.
Air purifiers remove allergy triggers and tackle dangerous VOCs, pet allergens, dust, respiratory allergens, molds, odors, and even mycotoxins from the indoor air.
However, not all air purifiers are efficient against eczema. Those with a basic filter won’t be able to trap the minute particles irritating the skin. The best air purifiers use a combination of a Pre-filter that traps larger particles, a HEPA, or true HEPA, filter that traps the smallest of particulate matter, and an activated carbon filter that handles the gaseous content, including VOCs.
So, which air purifier is the best for eczema? Let’s look at the best air purifiers on the market that can help keep allergens in check and offer the best performance.

1. GermGuardian AC5250PT Air Purifier

GermGuardian has been around for quite some time now, and their air purifiers offer medical-grade protection against the most common allergens and odors. The AC5250PT is no different. The purifier specifically helped us tackle pet-related issues, and hence we could easily filter out even the finest contaminants that can lead to eczema.
The 5250PT features a 5-stage filtration system in a sleek, modern design, and the purifier improves on many aspects of the simpler AC4825.
Compared to its predecessor, with the new pet pure technology i.e, an antimicrobial agent on the True Hepa Filter, we found 5250PT much more effective in cleaning and preventing the room from mildew, odours, allergens, and mold spores.
The defense against eczema-causing allergens starts with a permanent mesh filter paired with a charcoal pre-filter.
We used a PID meter to check to test total VOC levels. The charcoal/activated carbon filter could easily remove VOCs, fumes, and dangerous chemicals that might irritate the skin. The pre-filter works with a true HEPA filter that can trap even the smallest skin irritants.
The HEPA filter is EPA certified and can trap particles down to a size of 0.3 microns with a 99.97% accuracy. Although many purifiers offer a similar approach, the GermGuardian 5250PT goes an extra step and has added a UV-C light chamber.
The UV-C light chamber can destroy microbial DNA that can irritate the skin, which might lead to eczema. Eczema can also flare up because of mold spores in the air. We got a clear difference of 99.7% in the mold spores in the air with a viable mold spore detecting kit; we concluded that the unit is capable of such efficacy because of its UV-C chamber.
According to studies, the UV-C chamber filters and kills mold DNA, slowing and stopping mold growth, and can even kill coronavirus.
GermGuardian AC5250PT is efficient at what it does and can conveniently trap eczema-causing allergens, ideally in small to mid-sized rooms. We tested it in large rooms too, but it didn’t yield as fruitful results as in smaller or mid-sized rooms.
On a scale of 1 to 10, we have given this black body Germ Guardian tower model 9 because of its aesthetic design, quiet operation, excellent performance, and user convenience. It is a bit longer than a low-lying shelf and can be placed anywhere in the room without making it look congested.
Replaceable Filter Life: 6-8 months
Warranty: 5 years
Award: Best Budget Choice
What Do Other People Have to Say?
These are great. we now have a total of 3, 2 of these and 1 smaller one in bedroom. Was worried about our electric bill having 3 hooked up but the difference was unnoticeable on our last electric bill. 5 speed settings allow you to make it quieter or louder very easily. Filters are not cheap so factor the filter replacement costs into your decision.

Since then he has fewer occurrences of eczema. However, he complains about its filter replacement cost.[/su_note]

2. Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier

Winix is synonymous with durability and efficiency. With so many different models, it is simply one of the best air purifier manufacturers. The Winix 5500-2 is an excellent air purifier that builds on the success of the hugely popular 5500 before it and the mid-tier 5300-2.
The Winix 5500-2 improves over the outgoing WInix 5500 and adds smart features to the excellent 4-stage filtration system. The upgraded model is equipped with a pre-filter and washable carbon filter, showing better performance and convenience. The easy rest mode and timer allowed us to sleep peacefully at night without worrying about switching it off in the middle of the night.
The air quality meter showed that the pre-filter and the True HEPA filter helped us trap large and small particles that can lead to skin irritation, including hair, pet dander, dust mites, and even bacteria down to a size of 0.3 microns with a 99.97% efficiency.
The carbon filter absorbs dangerous VOCs, harmful chemicals, and foul odors, making the indoor air safer for our family and us. Winix’s PlasmaWave technology acts as the 4th stage of filtration and releases negative ions that stick to the contaminants making them heavier and decreasing any chance of them staying airborne. According to various studies, negative ions have proven very efficient at removing airborne contaminants.
Since the 5500-2 has a respectable 240 CFM CADR , it efficiently cleaned our 350 sq. ft bedroom, making it ideal for larger rooms. The air cleaner can clean the indoor air 5 times an hour in a 360 sq. ft. setting, making it an ideal option for our lounge or bedroom.
The Winix 5500-2 features an Auto mode that benefits us in automatically detecting if the air quality is decreasing and adjusting fan speed according to the air quality around the air purifier. This helps maintain optimal air quality even when we are asleep.
Overall, we think the Winix 5500-2 is a unique mix of excellent features, modern design, and exceptional operational costs, all at an affordable price point. Other manufacturers do offer similar features but at thrice or four times the price of Winix 5500-2. Thus, it won’t be wrong to rate Winix 5500-2 8.5 out of 10.
The Winix 5500-2 assists us in handling perfectly skin and respiratory allergens, has an affordable price tag, and brings additional features like the convenience of remote control and auto mode, making it to the top of our list.
Replaceable Filter Life: 12 months
Warranty: 2 years
Award: Best Overall
What Do Other People Have to Say?
Ask me again in six months or so. I am optimistic that the Winix air purifier will perform as well as the older model that is being used in another area of my home. The old one has been running 24 hours a day without any problems for years. I bought the new one and it’s a washable filter with a lot of confidence.

The model has worked throughout the period without any complaints, ensuring a refreshing and clear environment of the room.[/su_note]

3. Alen BreatheSmart Classic

Little can go wrong with the Alen BreatheSmart Classic. We added it to our list as it is the epitome of air purification from a quality manufacturer offering industry-leading technology.
The Classic is another powerful aesthetic design that can be paired with Alen’s BF35-VOC filter, which boasts a medical-grade H13 True HEPA filter, carbon filters, and a pre-filter in one package.
The unique manufacturing process for the filters allows Alen to reach a removal efficiency of 99.99% against a particulate matter that was specifically triggering eczema-like skin conditions in 2 out of 3 members.
In addition to eczema causing allergens, the Classic also helped us get relief from pollution, smoke, smog, toxic VOCs, and wildfire smoke making air breathable and light.
We tested and reviewed Alen BreatheSmart Classic and its predecessor Alen BreatheSmart Fit50, and found the latest model better on account of coverage. It helped us clean large suites and keep the risk of eczema at bay where the predecessor wasn’t much efficient.
1 being the lowest and 10 the highest, we rate Alen BreatheSmart Classic 8 because of its soothing white humming noise and impeccable performance. We tested it in a 1200 square feet apartment, where we did not only find an immediate difference in air quality but the calming effect in the eczema rash too.
The Alen BreatheSmart Classic isn’t cheap, and the filter replacement costs aren’t cheap, either. It can cost us $100 to replace the filter, but the yearly replacement time makes it less of a worry.
The filter can easily handle wildfire smoke and remove the finest particles that cause allergies. Thanks to the automatic mode and smart sensors, like the Winix 5500-2, we could adjust the fan speeds depending on the indoor contamination levels with the BreatheSmart Classic.
An air quality indicator always keeps us updated by showing the current air quality in the room. The indicator lights up red for bad air quality and triggers the maximum fan speeds to ensure quick removal of allergens and pollutants.
At 290 CFM, it could easily cover even the largest of spaces for us, making it an excellent whole-home air purifier that can help our team members with eczema in the long run.
The BreatheSmart Classic doesn’t have added purification stages like other options. Still, its complete protection doesn’t need an extra stage. This purifier isn’t at the top of the list because of the hefty price tag. It is almost four times as much as the Winix 5500-2 and offers comparable performance.
Replaceable Filter Life: 6 months
Warranty: Lifetime
Award: Best for Large Spaces
What Do Other People Have to Say?
This is a great product! My husband smokes in the house so I used a lot of air fresheners trying to cover up the odor. I purchased the Alen Breathsmart and chose the Hepa Fresh filter. The light came on to change the filter at 6 months. When I pulled the filter out, it was solid orange and reeks of cigarettes. I have not had to spray air freshener in 6 months! Loving my fresh smelling house.

[su_note note_color=”#bee6fc”]Update After 6 Months: Do they work? Definitely yes! During the summer period when usually eczema flares up, our tester pays frequent visits to a dermatologist and ENT for allergies.
However, this summer, it was different. It hasn’t completely stopped but we also don’t see any need to pay hospital visits.[/su_note]

4. Hathaspace HSP002

HATHASPACE offers a unique and efficient 5 stage filtration system that proved its performance and purified the indoor air even when we tested it in the clinic. The purifier’s beautiful sleek design perfectly helped our tester deal with eczema-causing allergies.
The manufacturer has done some work in upgrading the model. After using both HSP002 and HSP001, we found the new model worth investing in.
It did not only help us cover a larger area with an upgraded H13 filter but also allowed us to control fan speeds with 4 options rather than 3. Soon after installing it, we knew our indoor air quality, a feature its precursor didn’t have. Within an hour of use, the air quality improved from 90 to 23.
As Hathaspace suggests, we changed its filter every 4 months, which was a little too low for our liking, but thankfully the manufacturer has included not one but two pre-filters. The first pre-filter can be removed and washable, making everything seamless and easy to manage.
The pre-filter easily passes the indoor air onto the H13 HEPA filter that handles 99.95% of airborne contaminants down to a size of 0.1 microns.
The purifier has an activated carbon filter and a cold catalyst filter for gaseous pollutants and dangerous chemicals, ensuring complete protection.
HATHASPACE’s choice of not including a UV-C chamber concerns the unintentional production of ozone gas. Ozone is a known irritant, and the HSP002 is ozone-free hence won’t trigger any respiratory or skin allergies. Hence, compared to others, it was an additional step liked by our tester to protect himself against eczema-causing allergies.
According to our indoor quality tester, all 4 filters are coupled into one, which helps us easily handle ultrafine dust, traffic pollutants, tobacco smoke particles, and microorganisms that can flare up eczema.
Alen beats HATHASPACE on account of greater filter life. We rate the air purifier 7 out of 10. The air purifier made it to our list because of having the greatest coverage area of all the purifiers mentioned, along with five filtration stages, which ensured a continuous supply of breathable air for us.
With a maximum CADR of 200 CFM, Hathaspace HSP002 proved ideal when we placed it right in the middle of large spaces and medium-sized rooms. It helped us clean a large 750 square feet space twice per hour, making it an excellent all-rounder that offers excellent protection and design decisions.

What Do Other People Have to Say?
This is my first time using an air purifier and I must say, I am in shock. Within minutes of being turned on, I noticed a difference. I definitely had my best night of sleep in a while, though. I 100% recommend this purifier to anyone who has had trouble getting a good night of rest or anyone who feels like their current purifier is not getting the job done. IT’S ALSO SUPER QUIET!!

[su_note note_color=”#bee6fc”]Update After 6 Months: The filters are quite difficult to find and we have to replace them after every 4 months.
Cut short, we concluded that it is worth investing if we buy filters beforehand. The air purifier did an excellent job in controlling my eczema flare ups and especially redness. [/su_note]

5. Okaysou Air Purifier

We believe one solution to all our air environment lies within this Ultra Duo filtration system air purifier. The quiet operation and 5 physical stage filters embedded in Okaysou Air Purifier make it one of the best for medical settings; it showed its excellence in keeping allergies at bay when we tested it in the nearby crowded clinic.
We rated the air purifier 6 out of 10. We found that the latest quiet technology, Ultra-Duo filtration system, and more advanced turbine motor make these air purifiers stand out amongst the others. It was very easy to install; we had to remove the two filters from the plastic and embed it in the air purifier.
We used it at its highest setting in the middle of a large lounge of 700 sq. ft during the day and at its lowest in the bedroom at night. What we love most about the unit is how the indicator light turns off at the lowest speed, and quiet operation ensures a baby’s sleep.
The Ultra Filter frees the air from particles as small as 0.25 microns. The 3-in-1 Ultrafilter contains a mesh prefilter, an H13 HEPA filter, and an antibacterial filter.
The 2-in-1 Duo Filter comprises an activated carbon filter and a cold catalyst filter. Since the honeycomb pelletized carbon filter and catalyst filter adhere to odorous pollutants, we finally eliminated the pet’s urine odor and litter smell.
With a CADR of 125 CFM and a low noise profile of 22dB, Okaysou AirMax8L could clean the air five times per hour in our 185 square feet medium-sized lounge, next making it our go-to choice for our small study room.
Okaysou AirMax8L certification by CARB, CE, FCC, and ETL made us trust it and consider it one of the options for getting rid of eczema. The simple and sleek outlook of the unit is wrapped in white color, adding an elegant touch to our room, and giving it a decent and calming look on the whole.
Replaceable Filter Life: 6 months
Warranty: 1 year
What Do Other People Have to Say?
It works surprisingly well while cooking. One day I made fish right before my husband got off work, he didn’t smell it after he got home! He hates fish and complains about the smell every time I cook it. Well guess we found a solution!
